Recently, Sadiq Khan joined forces with the capital’s universities, conservatoires, expert organizations and research study centres to make the case for London as the college capital of the world.
The campaign began with an event at University College London to release a new publication from London Higher, the voice of the capital’s college sector, which highlights the methods which London combines scale, variety and excellence of college unrivaled amongst its global peers.
Speaking at the occasion, Tory Peer and chair of the APPG for London, Lord Kulveer Ranger, explained that London provides “world class” experiences in many areas that “we don’t shine a light on”.
If London institutions do not “do Londonmaxxing”, he suggested, other prominent cities all over the world will continue to highlight all that they have to provide– possibly at the UK capital’s cost.
” [Other cities] champion what they have, and it’s our job to champion what we have, especially when it’s so great,” he stated.
Meanwhile, future phases of the campaign will take a look at international student competitiveness, the sector’s contribution to financial development and the policy conditions required to support world-leading industries consisting of life sciences and the innovative economy.
The capital is home to more trainees and higher education institutions than international rivals like New York City, Boston and Singapore, while its universities produce economic activity, research breakthroughs and proficient graduates that support neighborhoods and industries around the UK and across the globe.

In a foreword to the publication, Khan describes London’s higher education sector as an important national property, assisting to drive growth, opportunity and global impact for the UK. The publication reveals that:
- London is the world’s leading college city by scale, variety and worldwide influence.
- The capital combines a concentration of universities, professional organizations and research study centres discovered nowhere else on earth.
- London’s college institutions contribute more to the UK economy than the Premier League and utilize more people than Sainsbury’s across the country.
- The benefits created by London’s higher education sector extend well beyond the capital through research study partnership, graduate talent, business creation and international financial investment.
Teacher Shitij Kapur, chair of London Greater and vice-chancellor and president of King’s College London, called the capital’s college sector “one of the UK’s biggest tactical properties”.
“As an international city, London competes for skill, research study and financial investment with the world’s leading centres of education and development. The strength of our higher education sector helps make sure the UK remains competitive, linked and prominent on the world phase.
“But worldwide management is never permanent. Cities around the globe are investing greatly in higher education and innovation. If the UK wants to remain internationally competitive, we should continue to nurture the conditions that permit London’s universities and research study institutions to flourish.”
Khan stated: “London’s universities are among the best on the planet. They open doors for people from every background while blazing a trail in research study and advancements in areas such as life sciences and AI, where London’s leading the way.
