From disputes on climate modification and social tensions to major wars– different conflicts are having an impact on the political landscape both in Germany and worldwide. “To allow trainees to take a look at these complicated interconnections scientifically and analyze political processes from a multidimensional approach, we have unified 4 sub-disciplines in one degree program,” states Professor Christoph Schuck from the Institute of Viewpoint and Political Science.
Together with the theoretical and methodological concepts of Comparative Politics, International Politics and Political Theory, students also end up being acquainted with the solution-oriented aspects of Conflict Studies. To date, the sub-discipline has only been used at a couple of German universities as a minor topic or a specialization within a Master’s degree program. In Dortmund, it is an important part of a Bachelor’s degree program for the first time. Teacher Matthias Kortmann, co-director of the new degree program together with Schuck, includes: “Structure on this multidisciplinary basis, students learn to determine and analyze disputes along with everyday and global politics with the assistance of quantitative and qualitative techniques.”
International career prospects
To contextualize the factors affecting dispute, the six-semester program also integrates perspectives from expert practice and from other scholastic fields, such as the liberal arts and theology. “In this way, students gain a practice-based understanding of how politics is shaped and investigated,” states Kortmann.
Aimed at prospective trainees from both Germany and abroad, Political Conflict Research studies is the first Bachelor’s degree program at TU Dortmund University taught entirely in English. It is flanked by networking chances for trainees at various phases of their studies along with language courses that make it possible for trainees to improve either their German or their foreign language skills. Schuck says: “This international focus prepares students in the best possible way for a Master’s degree or for transitioning to a career, for instance in political consulting, public relations, or political education.”
