Their intentions are often rooted in love, responsibility and a genuine desire to see their children succeed. Yet, in pursuing these noble goals, some parents unknowingly limit another equally important ingredient of success: creativity.

Creativity is no longer viewed as a talent reserved for artists, musicians or writers. In today’s world, it is recognised as one of the most valuable skills for innovation, entrepreneurship and problem-solving. The World Economic Forum has consistently identified creative thinking among the most important skills required for the future workforce, particularly as artificial intelligence and automation continue to transform industries. Employers increasingly seek individuals who can think independently, generate fresh ideas and adapt to changing circumstances rather than simply follow established routines.

Ironically, these are the very abilities that many children naturally possess. Young children are curious, imaginative and unafraid to experiment. They ask unusual questions, invent stories, create games from ordinary objects and approach problems from unexpected angles. However, as they grow older, some gradually learn that originality is less valued than obedience, that questioning adults may be considered disrespectful and that success is measured primarily through examination scores. Over time, creativity can quietly give way to conformity.

This reality is particularly relevant in Nigeria, where educational achievement is often closely linked to family pride and future economic security. Parents understandably encourage children to excel academically because competition for university admission and employment opportunities remains intense. However, when academic excellence becomes the only recognised measure of intelligence, other important abilities, including creativity, innovation and independent thinking may receive far less attention.

The issue is rarely intentional. Most parents do not consciously discourage creativity. Instead, it often happens through everyday habits, expectations and parenting decisions that appear harmless on the surface. Constantly emphasising perfect grades over curiosity, dismissing unconventional career aspirations, limiting opportunities for exploration and expecting children to follow predetermined paths can gradually weaken the confidence required to think creatively.

As Nigeria seeks to build a knowledge-based economy capable of competing globally, understanding how family environments influence children’s creative development has become increasingly important. The future may well belong not only to those who can memorise information but also to those who can imagine solutions that do not yet exist.

One of the most significant ways creativity is unintentionally suppressed begins with how success is defined within many families. From an early age, children often receive clear messages about what constitutes achievement. High examination scores are celebrated enthusiastically, while talents that fall outside conventional academics may receive considerably less attention.

This emphasis is understandable. Education has transformed countless lives in Nigeria, enabling individuals from modest backgrounds to become professionals, business leaders and public servants. Consequently, parents naturally encourage strong academic performance because they associate it with stability and opportunity. However, difficulties arise when academic achievement becomes the only recognised form of excellence.

A child who spends hours drawing imaginative illustrations may be told to stop wasting time and return to textbooks. Another who enjoys building simple machines from discarded household materials may hear that such interests are distractions from more “serious” subjects. Similarly, children passionate about music, storytelling, coding, fashion design or photography sometimes receive the impression that these interests are merely hobbies rather than potential foundations for successful careers.

In addition, many children grow up believing that there are only a handful of respectable professions worth pursuing. Medicine, Law, Engineering and Accounting are frequently presented as the safest pathways to success. While these professions remain highly valuable, repeatedly suggesting that other career aspirations are inferior can discourage children from discovering where their greatest talents truly lie.

Moreover, creativity often requires freedom to make mistakes. Innovation rarely emerges from getting everything right on the first attempt. Scientists conduct failed experiments before making discoveries. Entrepreneurs experience unsuccessful ventures before building successful businesses. Writers produce imperfect drafts before completing remarkable books. Yet some children grow up in environments where mistakes attract criticism rather than constructive guidance. Consequently, they begin avoiding risks altogether, preferring familiar answers over original ideas.

Perfectionism can therefore become an unexpected obstacle to creativity. Children who fear disappointing their parents may stop experimenting because innovation always carries the possibility of failure. Instead of asking unusual questions or proposing unconventional solutions, they focus exclusively on producing answers they believe adults want to hear.

Schools sometimes reinforce these attitudes through examination-focused learning. However, the family environment often determines whether children maintain confidence in their own imagination despite external pressures. Parents who celebrate curiosity alongside academic performance communicate a powerful message that learning involves exploration as much as memorisation.

Children are naturally inquisitive. They constantly ask why the sky changes colour, how aeroplanes remain in the air, why plants grow or why certain traditions exist. These endless questions are not signs of stubbornness; they are evidence of active thinking. Every question represents an opportunity to strengthen observation, reasoning and imagination.

Unfortunately, busy family routines and cultural expectations sometimes discourage this natural curiosity. Parents managing demanding work schedules, financial pressures and household responsibilities may understandably become impatient with continuous questioning. Responses such as “Because I said so,” “Stop asking unnecessary questions,” or “Just do what you are told” may end conversations quickly, but they also discourage independent thinking over time.

This does not mean children should challenge every instruction or disregard parental authority. Respect remains an essential family value. However, there is an important difference between teaching respect and discouraging curiosity. Children who feel comfortable asking thoughtful questions often develop stronger analytical skills because they learn to examine ideas rather than simply accepting them without reflection.

Play also deserves greater recognition as an important part of creative development. Many adults associate play primarily with entertainment, yet educational psychologists consistently emphasise that imaginative play supports language development, problem-solving, collaboration and emotional intelligence. When children invent games, build imaginary worlds or create stories, they are exercising the same creative thinking processes later used in science, engineering, entrepreneurship and innovation.

However, opportunities for unstructured play have gradually declined for many children. Academic schedules have become increasingly demanding, with school, lesson centres, homework and examination preparation occupying much of their time. While educational commitment is commendable, constantly structured routines leave little opportunity for exploration driven entirely by children’s own interests.

Technology has introduced additional complexity. Digital devices offer valuable educational resources, but excessive passive screen consumption can reduce opportunities for imaginative activities requiring original thought. Watching endless videos differs fundamentally from creating stories, designing projects or solving practical problems independently. Parents therefore play an important role in balancing educational technology with activities that encourage active creativity.

Furthermore, comparisons between siblings or peers can unintentionally undermine confidence. Statements such as “Your cousin is always first in class” or “Look at how talented your sister is” may be intended as motivation, but they often produce insecurity instead. Children become preoccupied with matching someone else’s achievements rather than discovering their own unique strengths. Creativity flourishes most effectively in environments where individuality is respected rather than constantly compared.

Importantly, children also learn through observation. Parents who demonstrate curiosity themselves by reading widely, learning new skills, discussing ideas openly or solving everyday problems creatively provide powerful examples that imagination remains valuable throughout adulthood. Such modelling often influences children more profoundly than verbal advice alone.

Such conversations teach children that original thinking deserves exploration rather than immediate dismissal.

Additionally, allowing children age-appropriate independence builds confidence in decision-making. When young people participate in solving everyday family challenges, planning activities or making certain personal choices, they gradually develop initiative and responsibility. These experiences contribute significantly to creative confidence because children learn that their ideas have value.

Educational partnerships are equally important. Parents and teachers should work together to create learning environments where questioning, experimentation and critical thinking are encouraged alongside academic achievement. Schools increasingly recognise the importance of project-based learning, collaborative activities and innovation competitions. Families can reinforce these experiences by showing genuine interest in children’s creative efforts rather than focusing exclusively on report cards.

It is equally important to understand that creativity contributes directly to economic development. Nigeria faces complex challenges requiring innovative solutions across agriculture, healthcare, education, technology, environmental sustainability and infrastructure. The next generation of inventors, researchers, entrepreneurs, engineers and policymakers will need the confidence to think differently if these challenges are to be addressed effectively. That confidence begins developing long before university, in homes where children’s ideas are heard, respected and encouraged.

Perhaps most importantly, parents should remember that creativity and academic excellence are not opposing goals. Some of history’s greatest scientists, engineers and medical researchers achieved remarkable breakthroughs precisely because they combined rigorous knowledge with imaginative thinking. Likewise, successful entrepreneurs rely on creativity to identify opportunities, while effective lawyers, teachers and architects use original thinking to solve complex professional problems. Encouraging creativity therefore strengthens rather than weakens educational achievement.

Nigerian parents have long demonstrated extraordinary commitment to their children’s education. Their sacrifices have enabled countless young people to overcome financial hardship, pursue higher education and build successful careers. These efforts deserve recognition and appreciation. However, as the demands of the twenty-first century continue evolving, preparing children for the future requires more than excellent examination results alone.
