
Students from Ghana have emerged as the leading performers in the 2025 West African Senior Citizen School Certificate Evaluation (WASSCE), protecting the very first three positions among prospects from throughout the sub-region.
The statement was made at the 74th Annual Council Meeting of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), which occurred between March 24 and 28 at the International Conference Centre in Accra.
According to a statement released on Thursday by WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs at its Ghana headquarters, Demianus Ojijeogu, the leading three candidates accomplished the highest aggregate scores amongst 2,612,830 students who sat for the evaluation in The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.
Miss Huda Suleman was named the total finest candidate, clinching the top prize and getting the Augustus Bandele Oyediran Award for the Best Candidate in West Africa for 2025. She was followed by Miss Paula Suwo in 2nd place, while Miss Matthea Aba Andoh protected third position.
The annual conference, which combines representatives from WAEC’s five member countries, likewise included management changes within the council. Ghana’s Chief Government Nominee, Prof Ernest Davis, was elected Vice Chairman for an one-year term, prospering Liberia’s Amos Completely.
The event was formally stated open by Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, who was represented by Vice President Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
In his address, Mahama commended WAEC for over seven decades of service, noting its role in maintaining academic requirements and cultivating cooperation among West African nations. Likewise speaking, Ghana’s Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, represented by Deputy Minister Dr Clement Apaak, highlighted the importance of evaluations in building both intellectual and practical proficiencies essential for nationwide advancement. WAEC revealed that Nigeria will host the 75th edition of its Annual Council Meeting in March 2027, following Ghana’s hosting of the 2026 event.
