The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has directed all public primary and secondary school instructors in Oyo State to embark on an indefinite strike beginning Monday, June 1, 2026, over the continued captivity of abducted instructors and pupils in the state.

In a circular outdated Might 31, 2026, and signed by the Oyo State Secretary of the union, Comrade Salami B. Olukayode, the NUT stated the instruction was released by its nationwide management and should be complied with by all impacted instructors throughout the state.

According to the union, instructors are to withdraw their services from schools “beginning from Monday, 1st June, 2026 till more notice” in line with the regulation from the national body.

The NUT discussed that the action ended up being required due to the prolonged detention of the abducted teachers and students by their captors, without any clear indication of their imminent rescue and safe release.

The union noted that the continued captivity of the victims had created fear and despondence among instructors, prevented parents from sending their kids to school, and heightened stress across neighborhoods in Oyo State.

“Kindly keep in mind that the instruction was provided against the continued detention of our colleagues and students by the abductors with no clear indication of their timeous rescue and safe release,” the statement read.

The union stated the strike was intended to further pressure the government to magnify efforts towards protecting the safe return of the abductees without more hold-up.

While advising members to comply completely with the instruction, the NUT advised instructors to remain law-abiding and stay safe in their respective homes, adding that the union stands in solidarity with the victims and their households as engagements with the government continue to protect the release of the abducted instructors and students.
