“With the new CALEDO structure, we are producing optimum working conditions for exceptional scientists who are performing research on subjects important for the future. The advancement of innovative solvents, for instance, can improve drug effectiveness to the benefit of all patients. At the same time, this brand-new state-of-the-art research structure will make RESOLV, the joint Cluster of Excellence of TU Dortmund University and Ruhr University Bochum (RUB), even more appealing to the best researchers,” stated Ina Brandes, Minister for Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. The Federal Government, the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and TU Dortmund University have invested around EUR90 million in the new building and significant instrumentation.
Special laboratories
CALEDO is the acronym for “Center for Advanced Liquid-Phase Engineering Dortmund”. The four-floor structure with an inner courtyard has 3,600 m2 of usable floor space, with unique labs for scientists from the following three departments: Biochemical and Chemical Engineering, Chemistry and Chemical Biology, and Physics. Accountable for the building’s building and construction was BLB NRW (North Rhine-Westphalia’s structure and realty management authority), whose Dortmund branch formed a project group together with the Corporate Center Building and Facility Management at TU Dortmund University. The structure, with its reddish brickwork, rounded corners and ribbon windows, was designed by Gerber, a prominent architects’ workplace in Dortmund.
“What made the construction work so challenging and distinct, apart from its unique exterior, was the high demands on technical structure services. In addition to office space and meeting room, we as BLB NRW have built highly specialized laboratories– and in so doing created area for innovative research study at TU Dortmund University,” stated Gabriele Willems, Handling Director of BLB NRW. The laboratories are equipped with major instrumentation worth around EUR10 million that enables advanced analysis for all elements of complicated liquid stage style.
