In overall, groups from 16 countries competed. In addition to sports disciplines such as soccer, martial arts, and track and field, the program also consisted of competitors in arranging medication and cleansing– offering robots a possibility to show their capabilities. While the majority of teams came from host nation China, international participants from nations such as Australia, Italy, and the Netherlands also took part.
TU Dortmund University was represented by a group of scientists and trainees from the Departments of Computer Science and of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. For the TU team, the championship was their first competition utilizing humanoid robotics 1.30 meters tall. Previously, the Nao Devils had taken on smaller robotics about 60 centimeters high. The robotics for the tournament were provided by the organizer. Nevertheless, how each robotic moved, processed data, and responded to what its cam identified was programmed by the teams. Using code and algorithms, they figured out how the robotics would walk, score goals, or prevent barriers.
