Equal and equitable participation in college is a human right. This was declared by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Specials needs. The exhibit “Conclusion? Addition!” shows how this human right is being realized at TU Dortmund University. Leading the way is the “Dortmund Department of Special Needs and Researches” (DoBuS) within the Center for College, a service and research study institution special in Germany.

Supporting program ranging from social media workshops to podcast recording

Visitors to the exhibit gain insight into the situation of students with specials needs and chronic diseases and can discover the services used by DoBuS. Prospective students have the chance, within the structure of the exhibit program, to utilize advisory services and to exchange concepts with students with specials needs. Visitors thinking about the topics of addition and accessibility can deepen their knowledge in workshops– for instance, on the topic of “Inclusive Social Network”— and at further events such as the live recording of a podcast with recognized specialists.

In 1977, as the first university in Germany, the Pedagogical Institute of Higher Education Ruhr– designed on U.S. universities– began with the methodical support of students with disabilities. In 1980, the Pedagogical Institute of College Ruhr was incorporated into what was then the University of Dortmund. From this preparatory work and merger, DoBuS and the so-called Dortmund Work Technique emerged. TU Dortmund University can therefore now reflect on nearly half a century of supporting trainees with impairments.

The objective of an inclusive university

The Dortmund Work Technique is a practice-tested, prototypical model that asks how the objective of an inclusive university can be approached step by action. It attends to both the individual research study situation of students with impairments and the college system as a whole. This point of view surpasses the advancement of elaborate private services and guarantees that available structures are also developed at TU Dortmund University.
