The governmental prospect of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has promised to abolish the Joint Admissions and Admission Board (JAMB) and scrap the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in its present kind if chosen President.

Sowore made the pledge in a post on his Facebook account, where he detailed strategies to reform Nigeria’s tertiary education admission process and change the current national service plan with a voluntary work program.

“When I end up being President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, JAMB will be abolished. Admission into tertiary institutions must be identified by the organizations themselves under a transparent, merit-based system, not by another layer of bureaucracy,” he said.

The AAC presidential candidate likewise proposed changing the NYSC with what he described as a two-year voluntary National Task Corps.

“The National Youth Service Corps will be scrapped in its existing type. In its location, we will develop a two-year, voluntary National Job Corps that ensures individuals meaningful work, practical abilities, entrepreneurship support, and paths into irreversible professions,” Sowore stated.

He argued that Nigerian youths should have higher access to economic opportunities instead of required government programs.

“Nigeria’s young people do not need more obligatory schemes. They require chances, jobs, skills, and the flexibility to pick their future,” he included.

Sowore’s proposal comes a day after the Federal Executive Council approved a detailed reform of the NYSC, consisting of proposed changes to its allowing Act, the introduction of civilian operational management, and release of corps members based on their fields of specialisation as part of efforts to make the plan more skills-driven and productivity-focused.
